US jobless benefit applications jump to 236,000 last week as concerns about labor market persist
The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits jumped last week, but remain in the same historically healthy range of the past few years despite growing concern over the health of the labor market.
Initial filings for unemployment benefits in Indiana dropped last week compared with the week prior, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday. New jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, fell to 3,976 in the week ending December 13, down from 4,729 the week before, the Labor Department said.
Initial filings for unemployment benefits in California rose last week compared with the week prior, the U.S. Department of Labor said Dec. 10. New jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, increased to 48,041 in the week ending Dec. 6, up from 33,542 the week before, the Labor Department said.
The November job gains were higher than the 40,000 economists had forecast. The October job losses were caused by a 162,000 drop in federal workers, many of whom resigned at the end of fiscal year 2025 on Sept. 30 under pressure from billionaire Elon Musk’s purge of U.S. government payrolls.
